Green marbled yeast pot
$191.00
Description
A rare green beauty you would have to dig deep in the Italian antique market for.
Origin: Puglia ealy 1900s
This unique pot is typical of what was used for storing the family’s all-important mother yeast in Puglia.
The green splatter effect on the surface comes from the ancient tradition of ‘smammriato’ - where artisans, in order to conceal defects from enamelling, dripped additional colours on the surface using small branches, especially bunches of thyme or from olive trees as a brush.
This unique technique means each piece is one of a kind, with the wonderful colour combination of vivid green spots set against the creamy base.
Stands approx 13cm tall
Remove loose dirt with a soft bristle brush; a cloth may snag on fragile surfaces. Washing with tap water is acceptable, but distilled or deionized water is preferable. Water temperature should be lukewarm or cooler.
