'Stars and stripes' pattern ceramic jug
$150.00
Description
Origin: Grottaglie, Puglia early 1900s
A hand-thrown jug used for wine (or water). The hand painted floral motif is symbolic of the Puglia region, known as ‘righe & stelle’ (or 'stars and stripes').
The design is particular to Grottaglie, a town famed for its age-old ceramic craft, where circles are combined to create rosettes or star formations. Since the 1800s the flowers were made with stencils, originally cut from sponges. It is particularly rare due to the pastel blue floral and 'lilac' coloured stripe on the spout - usually the design is hand painted in a deep blue.
Stands approx 16cm tall
Remove loose dirt with a soft bristle brush; a cloth may snag on fragile surfaces. Washing with tap water is acceptable, but distilled or deionized water is preferable. Water temperature should be lukewarm or cooler.
